3. "Dragon Teapot" The body of the teapot, lid & spout were wheel thrown in buff stoneware, and set aside to firm. The spout was trimmed and cut, the tail coil rolled, the wings slab rolled, and the front claws and hind legs were hand pinched and moulded before being slipped onto the body. The head and neck were hand moulded and the large scales added to the head, neck, and tail. When firm, additional carving was carried out to gain the dragon's final shape, and the small scales were then carved into the body of the dragon. The entire outside surface of the pot was then painted with different shades of mixed slip colours, then fired between 980-1000C. A basic white opaque glaze was poured into the insides of the body and lid, and a transparent stoneware glaze mixture 96% with the addition of 2% cobalt & 2% copper was spray glazed over the outside of the teapot and lid's surfaces, fired at between 1260-1300 C. Gold leaf was applied by hand to random scales & body areas. Linda Woolford. Isle of Wight. UK email: linda.woolford@btinternet.com |
