2,000 years ago the city of Petra was carved out of the sandstone hills of Southern Jordan. The approach through a narrowing gorge which darkens as the sunlight is squeezed out gives no promise of the prospect ahead. Then, at its darkest narrowest point, just when you feel like giving up, the dark walls of rock part and you glimpse a magnificent building carved in the rock and glowing with sunshine. Walking from darkness into light I found myself crying with emotion. Four years on from my trip it still remains a vivid image. The friend we travelled with to Jordan sent me a postcard last November - "Remember the journey down the Siq to Petra?" she wrote. In a moment I had my idea for the competition entry. The building in the rockface was altered to include symbols personal to myself. The door in the building which led nowhere now goes somewhere. From darkness to light and then onwards into the unknown ................ from one millenium to the next.
