2. "Lantern Clock" Raku pot, manganese oxide on surface and lustre glaze on clock face. 32.5 cms high x 8 cms wide x 6.5 cms deep I am fascinated by the combination of functions. I wanted a clock tower lit from inside. With light casting flickering shadows outside. When thinking about light stretching out from the pot I wanted the hands to stretch outside the definition of the tower as if time was escaping. I was enchanted by the Arabian appearance of the manganese oxide when brushed on to the scraped surface of raku so I cut the slanting windows to emphasise this. I chose the lighter yellow of the glaze inside to give an evening type light in the dusk inside my room. I had to work out how to flue the candle to avoid cooking the clock. This is done by a double walled flue ascending from the front to the rear of the pot and a corresponding flue hole in the rear of the clock and is effective in keeping the clock mechanism cool for about 3 to 4 hours of candle burning.
