"Biscuit Jar : Plenty" Majolica on Terracotta Thrown My work is
concerned primarily with the tradition and interpretation of the functional
vessel. Concerns with elevating daily life and experiences through the art
object have been a starting point. Interest in colour, pattern, form, surface, and
form and surface relationships, ideas about indulgence, and implications of
motion, gesture, and growth have been influences in my investigations. The "Decorative
Arts" tradition and the relationship of items made to attitudes felt are of
continued interest. Technically, my work is done in oxidation-fired terra
cotta, with terra sigellata on exposed clay surfaces. A thick, white majolica is
usually used, and the colours painted on the surface of the raw glaze like doing
a watercolour on blotter paper. This low-tech clay, widely available in nature,
and traditional technique in glazing and decoration represent a populist
material and method, where the vision and skill of the artist give value to
common materials.
