Roger Lewis
Semi-functional and sculptural forms in earthenware & stoneware are related by similar making methods.
Ideas stem from investigations into the creative potential of clay.

My main working method has evolved over 30 years of continuous development exploring the possibilities derived by manipulating thin sheets of clay.
My experimental approach to handbuilding regularly throws up new directions. About 9 years ago this exploration led me to discover the potential of using cushions of air captured within thin sheets of clay. Since then I have been working on a series of forms that utilise this discovery. Earlier forms had pictorial elements pressed into the cushion of clay. These forms also had rims which were made with cushions of clay. I became more and more attracted to these rims which eventually developed into forms in their own right - as in this particular piece.
